« You cannot miss the Richard Demarco Gallery in Melville Crescent. It is the only building where the lights do not go off at 5.30 p.m. » L'affiche de l'exposition "New Directions" inaugurée en août 1970 pendant le festival d'Edinbourg résume bien l'esprit effervescent, créatif et fédérateur des événements organisés par l'infatigable Richard Demarco. Artiste, fondateur de théâtre, galeriste curieux, formidable imprésario et agrégateur des pratiques artistiques expérimentales, il transforme, dès la fin des années 1960, la scène écossaise en épicentre connecté aux milieux artistiques les plus variés allant de l'Amérique Latine à l'Europe Centrale et de l'Est. Le festival d'Edinbourg deviendra la plateforme d'élection, intermédiale et pluridisciplinaire avant la lettre, de la rencontre entre artistes, galeristes et performeurs comme Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic, Ida Biard, Sanja Ivekovic, Goran Trbuljak, Wiesław Borowski, Tadeusz Kantor, Paul Neagu, Günther Uecker, Arnulf Rainer ou Ian Hamilton Finlay. « Strategy : Get Arts » en 1970, « Romanian Art Today » en 1971, « Atelier '72 Exhibition of 43 Polish artists » en 1972, « Austrian Exhibition » en 1973 ou bien « Aspects '75. 49 Yougoslav artists » et les actions « Passepart » en 1975 sont autant de repères clé pour comprendre les pratiques alternatives sur les scènes locales et de moments d'échange international qui décloisonnent des situations politiques et territoriales complexes.
La rencontre avec Richard Demarco sera l'occasion de revenir sur son parcours à la fois de galeriste explorateur et d'archiviste méticuleux, auteur d'une foisonnante base documentaire et photographique.

It is the only building where the lights do not go off at 5.30 p.m. » announced the poster for the "New Directions" exhibition in august 1970 during the Edinburgh Festival. This little phrase alone sums up the lively, creative and federative mood of the events organised by the ever-active Richard Demarco. Artist, theatre founder, curious gallery owner, formidable impresario and aggregator of experimental artistic practices, Demarco will soon transform, starting with the end of 1960s, the Scottish art scene into a connected hub of various artistic milieus, going from Latin America to Central and Eastern Europe. The Edinburgh Festival will soon become the intermedial, interdisciplinary platform, bringing together artists and performers alike as Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic, Ida Biard, Sanja Ivekovic, Goran Trbuljak, Wiesław Borowski, Tadeusz Kantor, Paul Neagu, Günther Uecker, Arnulf Rainer or Ian Hamilton Finlay. « Strategy : Get Arts » in 1970, « Romanian Art Today » in 1971, « Atelier '72 Exhibition of 43 Polish artists » in 1972, « Austrian Exhibition » in 1973 or « Aspects '75. 49 Yougoslav artists » and « Passepart » actions in 1975 became landmark events in understanding alternative local practices and the quality of international exchange that broke down territorial and political barriers.
The evening will bring the occasion of going back to Richard Demarco's trajectory as both prospective gallery-maker and minute archive-gatherer, author of an impressive documentary and photographic database.
